The music for Ugly Season was originally written for Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich's extensive dance piece The Sun Still Burns Here. The piece has been created for the Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and has been performed in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York City and Boston in 2019.

Now the whole project can be heard in its entirety on the album Ugly Season . And despite its somewhat curious origins, the album is considered a true studio album and an album that has become something of a fan favourite in an already impressive catalogue.
