Quaker Strongholds

Of the comments which have been made on this book, there is but one to which I wish to make any reply. Some of my readers have regretted the absence from its pages of any reference to certain fundamental doctrines of Christianity ;and have, I fear, more or less misunderstood my silence in this direction. It is true that I have contented myself with trying to explain what is, for practical purposes, the strength of our special position as compared with that of our fellow-disciples wherein consist the strongholds of that separate testimony which we desire to maintain in its purity. This attempt did not, in my view, involve any need for a full exposition of our Christian faith that faith once delivered to the saints which we hold in common with the whole Christian Church. Friends have never professed any separate theological or historical creed ;and it did not occur to me that the strict limitation of my subject to matters of practice and of spiritual experience could give rise to any doubts of the breadth and fulness of our unity with our fellow Christians as to the common root and source of all our faith and hope.
