Retention Strategies for Epidemiologists in Taiwan: Occupational Stress, Psychological Stress, Human Resource Capital, Motivation Systems

Recently, emerging new infections such as SARS or bird flu have placed significant stress on epidemiologists, leading to high intent to change career. Based on possible staff shortages, retention strategies for epidemiologists have gained importance. From the resource-based view, this book examines how human resource capital (HRC) and motivation systems (MS) influence the relationship between stress and intent to say. The book concluded that occupational/psychological stress, HRC, and MS had an impact on epidemiologists¿ intent to stay. HRC and MS function well as moderators on the relationship between stress and intent to stay. To epidemiologists in different institutions, HRC and MS may have different moderating effects. The SARS epidemic has raised worldwide attention. Managers should enhance HRC and MS to attenuate epidemiologists¿stress, which may, in turn, strengthen their intent to stay. The book, therefore, should help shed light on present emerging infection environment, and should be especially useful to professionals and managers in epidemiology fields, or anyone who are interested in research on epidemiology or management.
