What Was Hidden

Addison looked out into the night. A beautiful smell filled her nose, the smell of damp dirt and cedar after a long awaited rain. She stared across the street of the hotel parking lot. Her eyes flickered along the tree-line as she searched for the culprit. She stepped into the street, and then stepped again, inching closer and closer. A shadow moved slowly back and forth just beyond the trees. Addison squinted as she looked into the shadows of night. As she reached the other side of the street, light growling came from beyond them. It ran passed her. Addison knelt down as she called out for the dog to come closer. She peered out into the silent night as crickets chirped around her. Hiding in the holes of rocks and fallen logs, making them feel safe. Suddenly, the crickets went quiet, and a searing pain filled Addison's head. She fell the ground as she tried to peer behind her, and as her vision began to blur, a pair of bare feet stepped beside her.
