Tinkly and Deputy Rake (who'd do anything for her) sneak out to mount a rescue from neighbouring Townton: a lawless settlement with a penchant for hanging suspects without trial. Along the way, Tinkly suffers the effects of blue ice lollies, while Deputy Rake falls foul of the fictional folk hero Bandit-Man. In book 3, Grizzleton's bank is robbed by the Coyote Colt Kid and one of Bear's deputies faces the blame. Only the Kid's former lover, Grizzleton's priest Father Yarek, can provide any hope to clear the deputy's name.
